Chapter thirteen

“Hi, Doctor Hunter.” The guard smiled up at me as we approached the security desk at The Alfred.

My shoulders slumped. My big idea of tucking my hair into a cap and wearing sunglasses to hide my face was sketchy at best, but all I had to work with was whatever was in Laura’s car. Getting to view the security footage of the day was going to be hard at best. Now it would be impossible.

I tensed, glancing around, expecting the arrival of a troop of security guards to hustle me out of the hospital. After all, I shouldn’t be here. I adjusted my cap when I spotted the security camera and looked the other way as a middle-aged man wearing a stockman’s hat and Driza-Bone coat walked though a nurse at the end of the corridor.

Laura sidled to the window he sat behind and rested her elbows on top of the counter. His gaze trailed to Laura and stayed there. Her gaze dipped to his badge, “Hello Jason.”

My sister suddenly sounded as though she was Emma Stone. Jason’s rounded cheeks pinked.

“How’s it going today?” she asked.

He licked his lips, his gaze sliding to me and then back to Laura. “Getting busy. Morning rush, you know. People turning up for their procedures. A couple of nurses running late. That type of thing...”

“You’re certainly the man to speak to, then,” Laura said. She emphasized the word ‘man’. Jason was no more than a boy, but he straightened his shoulders and puffed out his chest. She drew her bottom lip between her teeth. Jason’s mouth parted and I swear he groaned under his breath. “Do you remember about a week ago a man ran down the hallway and crashed into Doctor Hunter?”

Jason nodded. “He took Doctor Hunter out pretty good.”

“He certainly did,” Laura replied.

“Do you think we can see the video footage. We’d really like to see his face to make sure he wasn’t injured as well?” Laura said.

Jason mouth opened and closed. Sweat beaded on his forehead. “I’m... afraid that’s private information... and I... really think Doctor Hunter shouldn’t be here.”

All Jason had to do was hit a button under the desk, and guards would come running. The Alfred took security seriously.

While I hesitated and tensed to run, Laura leaned on the counter and brought her elbows together. Her cleavage popped over the top of her neckline. Jason’s eyes dropped and flared.

“Are you sure you can’t help? It’s really important,” Laura said.

Jason licked his lips. His gaze flicked from mine to Laura’s bust. He tried to turn his head to look back to me, but his gaze locked on Laura. “Well, I...”

I pressed the advantage. “The hospital would be liable for his injuries.”

“Did Charles Cassidy send you down?” Jason asked Laura’s bust.

“Of course,” I said, hoping to hell Jason didn’t decide to confirm. If he did, we’d have to make a run for it.

“It won’t take us long.” Laura tilted forward. The material of her top strained against the pressure from her bust.
